I'm going to play the contrarian here. It seems pretty clear from this one horrible, horrible image that they were going for something really peculiar and probably disturbing and hilarious at the same time. Let's assume it would have been a box office flop, and we'd be in the same position we are now; waiting for a re-boot. I would rather have this freaky thing waiting for me on TBS at 2:00 am than the film that actually got made.
